Using sail alone, providing conditions were favourable (I’m only after a rough estimate, eg, three days, a fortnight, a month etc etc). Depart Bristol arrive New York (just for reference). I’m illustrating a short story for someone and they want to know how long (roughly) such a journey should take for the sake of realim, west England to East Coast US (or vice-versa), most direct route. Thanks!

We would like to travel the world for approximately a year by sailing to various destinations. I realize there are people that sail their entire lives and never do something like this, but I really want to know if it is possible and the best way to go about it. How long will it take my husband and I to learn everything we need to know about the ocean, sailing, and so on until we would be capable of such a venture? Some relevant info: -We live in the USA and are both in our late twenties. -Neither one of us has any experience in sailing at the present time. -We are both in good shape and absolutely love to travel. -We are currently 4 hours from the ocean but might consider a relocation to make this dream a reality. If it’s easier just assume that we will move to a coastal community. -Budget for a boat is likely in the neighborhood of $100-$150K. This is a very soft estimate because I really do not know how much you SHOULD spend. Thank you for any information on this. These are excellent answers so far (other than the first one posted). Really this is first a question of feasibility and any details beyond that are very much appreciated. Obviously, I understand that nobody is ever “safe” on the ocean. I’m not looking for reassurance that this is not all that dangerous and I appreciate and totally agree with the words of warning/wisdom from all of you veterans!

We want to sail from Seattle to New Zealand making periodic stops along the way for a day or so island hopping all the way down. We understand we may be stuck in New Zealand for several months before the weather is right to sail back. We are in a 30 foot Columbia Defender right now but are considering buying a bigger boat (maybe 35 to 40 footer) but this little Defender is a tough, scrappy boat and set up nicely for two which is all we are.

I recently met a friend who shares some sailing fantasies. He is saying you can just buy a 28′ sail boat and sail across the pacific. Is this true, i would have though you’d need a bigger boat. How small of a boat is possible and how long would it take if rushed?

I recently inherited this boat — 1937, 35 feet, with sails and a restored motor. Unfortunately, the motor is the only restored item. The rest of the boat is need of structural work in order to make her sea-worthy once again. She was once (and can become again) a beautiful vessel. I am not knowledgable about sail boats, so I would like the future owner to be someone who will give her the care and attention she needs. I am sure that she will be an ideal investment for someone, who is willing to do (or fund) the repair work. Once the work has been completed, she will surely be worth a considerable amount of money, given her age. I sell lots of items on ebay, but somehow think that is not the best venue for this kind of transaction.
